Why a drop point
The default hunting and EDC shape, and the safest general answer. The spine curves down to the tip in a convex line, which keeps the point low and strong and leaves plenty of belly for skinning. It is hard to make a drop point bad at anything.
Every drop point here →About CPM-S30V
The long-time American benchmark. Holds an edge far longer than 420HC and still sharpens on ordinary stones. Chippy if you pry with it.
1-5 is a relative ranking drawn from published composition and hardness, not a lab measurement. Higher is better on every axis, and no steel is a 5 across the board — edge retention and toughness pull against each other. All CPM-S30V knives
What owners say
Drawn from 1,433 owner discussions of the Spyderco Native 5 Lightweight since 2024. The opinions are theirs. The specifications above come from the maker.
What owners like
- Hand-filling for its size: one owner of the S30V Lightweight calls it the most comfortable thing they have held and says the lack of a thumb ramp allows any grip, and a long-time Para 3 Lightweight owner prefers how the Native sits in the hand and likes its deeper choil
- Simple to maintain: three T8 screws take it apart and there are no liners and no washers, and one owner says it goes back together drop-shut, solid and centered
- S30V holds an edge well here: one owner says their S30V Native keeps an edge better than most of their other knives up to Elmax, and another calls the steel awesome and learned to sharpen on theirs
- The back lock is easy to work with thick gloves or long nails, according to one owner, and another who never understood preferring a back lock over a compression lock calls the Lightweight's action incredible, with vault-like lockup
- A sleeker carry than the Para 3: one owner who rarely carried a Para 3 because it felt big and awkward says the Native's smaller handle and slimmer profile fixed that
- Two owners say they regret selling theirs, and one of them bought another with birthday money
What owners flag
- Stiff out of the box: one owner found theirs so stiff it was hard to open and got cut closing it one-handed, another says a 15V Lightweight was stiff as hell until repeated use and a little loosening, and an S30V Lightweight owner needed a couple of months of use before it would flick
- The stock clip rides high: one owner in a retail job says it shows too much above the pocket, and another says the spoon clip feels loose on a knife this small and moved to an MXG clip
- Closing the back lock one-handed is awkward for one owner, and another who likes to fidget prefers a compression lock
- One buyer's new Native 5 got stiffer and began shedding metal shavings from the pivot within an hour of use, until it could not be opened one-handed
- S30V can chip at the thin edge Spyderco grinds, according to one owner who had a Brouwer chip three times in that steel and put a MagnaCut blade in their Native 5 instead
- The FRN scales feel scratchy to one owner
At 2.95 inches of S30V in a 2.5 oz FRN handle, the Native 5 Lightweight is a back lock in roughly Para 3 size. The handle has no thumb ramp and a deep choil, which one owner says allows any grip, and one owner who found the Para 3 too big and awkward to carry says the Native now gets the pocket time.
Three T8 screws and no washers or liners make it easy to strip, and one owner says it reassembles centered and drop-shut. Several owners report new knives arriving stiff and work them in over a couple of months of use or with a pivot adjustment and some grease; one buyer whose new knife shed metal shavings from the pivot is the worst report. One owner says S30V holds an edge better than most of their other knives, while another warns it chips at a very thin edge. The stock clip leaves too much handle showing for one owner, and LynchNW and MXG clips are the swaps owners mention.
The Para 3 Lightweight is the comparison owners make most: similar size, compression lock against back lock. One owner who likes to fidget prefers the Para 3, while one who carried Para Military 2s and Para 3s for years moved to a G10 Native 5 for its thinner slicing blade and lockup with hardly any blade play. The Delica and Sage 5 come up as the other small Spydercos in the same rotation.
Native 5 Lightweight or Para 3 Lightweight?
Owners who have both split on lock and hand feel. A long-time Para 3 Lightweight owner prefers the Native's grip because it has no thumb ramp and a deeper choil, and another found the Para 3 too big to carry and switched. One owner who likes to fidget prefers the Para 3's compression lock, and another who finds the Native awkward to close one-handed ranks the Para 3 first.
Why is my new Native 5 so stiff?
Several owners report new ones arriving tight. One says their S30V Lightweight could be flicked after a couple of months of use, and another loosened a stiff 15V version after repeated use. A Maxamet Lightweight owner fixed theirs by adjusting the pivot screws, greasing the pivot surfaces and oiling where the blade meets the lock.
How hard is it to take apart?
Easy, according to two owners. One counts three T8 screws and no liners and says it goes back together drop-shut and centered; the other found nothing inside but the blade, two handle halves and the clip, with no washers.
Is S30V a good steel for this knife?
Two owners are positive: one says their S30V Native outlasts most of their other knives up to Elmax, and another learned to sharpen on theirs and calls the steel awesome. One owner who had S30V chip on a very thin Spyderco edge prefers MagnaCut or SPY27 instead.
What clip should I put on it?
LynchNW and MXG deep-carry clips are the swaps owners mention. One owner ordered a deep-carry clip because the stock one shows too much handle above the pocket, and another moved to an MXG clip because the stock clip felt loose on a knife this small.
