Guides

Each guide is a filter over the same catalog, so nothing here can claim a knife we have not measured. Every list says which spec it is ordered by — none of them are ranked by opinion.

EDC knives under 3 inches

Three inches is the line a lot of city knife ordinances draw, and plenty of workplaces draw it too. These are the knives that stay under it. Blade length is the manufacturer's published figure — measure your own local rule against it before you carry, because some jurisdictions measure the cutting edge and some measure the whole blade.

The lightest EDC folders

A knife you leave at home because it drags your pocket is worth nothing. These are the folders under two and a half ounces. Weight is the manufacturer's figure for the knife alone.

Replaceable-blade hunting knives

A replaceable-blade knife trades sharpening for swapping. You never dress an edge on an elk again; you also carry a box of blades and accept that a scalpel-thin blade snaps if you twist it. These are the systems worth knowing.

MagnaCut knives

MagnaCut is the steel most worth paying up for right now: it holds an edge like the S30V family, takes abuse closer to a tool steel, and resists corrosion better than either. On a knife that lives in a wet sheath, that combination is the whole argument.

Scandi-grind bushcraft knives

A scandi grind is a single bevel running from the edge partway up the blade. It bites into wood instead of glancing off it, and because the bevel is flat you can lay the whole thing on a stone and feel when you are on it. That is why it dominates bushcraft.

Fixed blades for big game

Once an animal is bigger than you can roll over on your own, blade length and spine thickness start to matter. These are the fixed blades with four inches or more, with the spine measurement that tells you whether it will slice or split.

Knives for wet, bloody work

Blood is salty and a sheath holds moisture against a blade for days. These knives run steels our reference table ranks 4 or 5 for corrosion resistance, which is the axis that actually matters when the knife spends its life wet.

The best of the budget tier

Cheap knives stopped being bad about fifteen years ago. What you give up now is edge retention and fit-and-finish, not function. Every knife here is in our lowest price band; the steel column shows exactly what the saving costs you.

Knives made in the USA

Country of origin is the manufacturer's own stated figure. These are the knives built in the United States.

Traditional slip-joint pocket knives

A slip joint has no lock: a backspring holds the blade open under normal cutting and folds it if you push hard the wrong way. That makes it legal in places a locking folder is not, and it is why this pattern has outlived every trend.
