MagnaCut vs S30V: is the upgrade worth it?

MagnaCut is meaningfully better than S30V at the thing that matters most for a hunting knife — it resists rust better than S30V while being noticeably tougher, so it chips less at a thin edge. For a folder that lives in a dry pocket the gap is small enough that S30V remains excellent value.
What actually changed
S30V and its descendants get their wear resistance from chromium carbides, which locks chromium into carbides instead of leaving it dissolved in the steel where it fights rust. MagnaCut was designed to avoid that trade: it forms vanadium and niobium carbides instead, leaving free chromium in solution. The result is high corrosion resistance and high toughness at the same time, which the S30V family cannot do.
Where you will notice it
In a wet sheath, on an animal, over several days. Blood is salty and a sheath holds moisture against the blade. That is the environment where MagnaCut's corrosion resistance earns the premium, and it is why it has taken over the hunting fixed-blade market so quickly.
Where you will not
Opening boxes. For a dry-pocket EDC folder, S30V holds an edge about as long, sharpens about as easily and costs less. Buying MagnaCut for office duty is buying insurance against a risk you do not run.
And S45VN?
S45VN is the S30V family's own answer — more chromium in solution than S35VN, so better corrosion resistance with slightly more edge retention. It sits between S30V and MagnaCut on the axis that matters and is often the cheaper way to most of the benefit.
