Hogue Deka G10

EDC FolderFolding

The Deka on a solid G-10 frame in CPM-20CV rather than the polymer-handled MagnaCut version. Same 3.25" clip point, same ABLE lock, two tenths of an ounce heavier. MagnaCut resists corrosion better and 20CV holds an edge marginally longer; the real difference you will feel is the G-10, which is stiffer and grippier than the polymer.

Why a clip point

The front third of the spine is 'clipped' away in a concave sweep, dropping the point below the spine line and putting it out in front. That makes a finer, more controllable tip than a drop point — better for piercing, slightly weaker under load. The Buck 110 pattern is the archetype.

About CPM-20CV

Crucible's answer to M390 and chemically near-identical to it. Superb edge retention and corrosion resistance, slow to sharpen.

What owners say

Drawn from 20 owner discussions of the Hogue Deka G10 since 2024. The opinions are theirs. The specifications above come from the maker.

What owners like

  • The stock G10 is the reason to pick this version over the polymer Deka: one owner of the G-Mascus model says the stock G10 scales are very nice, and the peel-ply G10 on a dealer exclusive is described as super grippy
  • Sharp and a good cutter for its size: one owner found the 20CV blade razor sharp out of the box, another says it cuts like a laser, and one carries a Gen 2 20CV as a warehouse work knife
  • Stays light: one owner calls it super light, in the same class as the Bugout
  • One owner with several Dekas who bought a Bugout to compare says the Deka's action is clearly better, and a Wharncliffe owner calls theirs pretty smooth
  • It turns into a regular carry: one owner rocks it often alongside an Osborne, and another says loving it ended their urge to buy more knives

What owners flag

  • Ergonomics are the weak point in one comparison with an Osborne 940, which rates the Deka's blade good but its handle shape sub-par
  • One owner never warmed to theirs because the blade is too light to make the crossbar action satisfying, and prefers a Vosteed Corsair
  • A newer one can feel sticky: one owner says the bar lock feels kind of sticky on aggressive flicks and wonders whether it needs more break-in
  • The pocket clip is the part a Wharncliffe owner did not like and planned to replace
  • Steel is 20CV, not MagnaCut, and one fan of the knife wishes the G10 model had come with MagnaCut
  • Sharpening needs a little care: one owner nicked the thumb studs on a Deka while sharpening, and another worries the bump in the Wharncliffe's compound grind will complicate sharpening over time

This is the Deka in CPM-20CV with G10 scales, mostly seen in G-Mascus or the peel-ply G10 of a dealer exclusive. Owners carry it as a light crossbar folder for everyday cutting, one as a warehouse work knife, and the stock G10 is the draw: two people who have heard the polymer scales on the MagnaCut Deka are poor point to this version as the one that does not need aftermarket scales.

The Osborne 940, the Kershaw Iridium and the Asher Spiro are the knives it gets weighed against. One comparison rates the Deka's blade above the thick-ground 940 but its ergonomics below it, and one owner found the light blade made the action unsatisfying. One owner carries it often and another says it ended the urge to buy more knives, with a sticky bar lock on a new knife and a clip one owner plans to replace as the small complaints.

Should I get the G10 20CV Deka or the polymer MagnaCut Deka?

The G10 version is the one recommended to people who want to skip aftermarket scales, since one owner rates the stock G10 as very nice while a MagnaCut owner says they hate their polymer scales. The trade is steel: one fan wishes the G10 model came in MagnaCut.

Can I put the G10 scales on a MagnaCut Deka?

One owner bought a G10 scale set separately and fitted it to a Deka. They said it fit fine-ish, but the blade sat a little off center when tightened to zero blade play and would not drop shut without a shake.

Deka, Osborne 940 or Kershaw Iridium?

Opinions split along cutting versus feel. One pick goes to the Deka because, unlike the 940, it actually cuts, and someone who has had a 940 for years says its thick grind cuts like garbage. On the other side, the 940 is called the gold standard of crossbar action, and one owner finds the 940 disappears in the pocket best but still carries the Deka often.

Deka or Asher Spiro?

Opinion is split. One owner who has had both says the Asher feels great and the Deka is similar to most crossbars at its price. Another picks the Deka while calling the Asher fantastic, and a third suggests the Asher for anyone who does not want to upgrade the Deka's scales.
